Is food safe after a power outage?
Safety first
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed.
- Never taste food to check safety; smell cannot prove safety.
- Note when power stopped; discard questionable perishables.
Fix it nowEight steps
- Record outage duration and whether appliance doors stayed closed.Closed refrigerator: about four hours; full freezer: 48; half-full: 24.
- Before four hours, move refrigerated perishables into an ice-filled cooler.Keep food at 40°F or below; minimize door openings.
- Check food temperatures with a food thermometer before appliances cool again.Smell, appearance and current coldness cannot establish earlier safety.
The other five steps
- Discard refrigerated perishables after four hours without power or another cold source.Includes meat, fish, milk, eggs, leftovers and cut produce.
- Discard perishables held above 40°F for two hours; discard if duration is unknown.Cooking cannot reliably rescue improperly stored food.
- Discard unrefrigerated perishables after one hour when surroundings exceed 90°F.Hot conditions shorten the safe holding time.
- Refreeze frozen food only with ice crystals or temperatures at or below 40°F.Check each package before it cools again.
- Keep undamaged shelf-stable food; discard anything directly exposed to floodwater. Not everything needs discarding; floodwater contamination is a separate hazard.
When to stop
Stop and get a pro if:
- Someone is unconscious, not breathing or struggling to breathe: call 911 immediately.
- Someone may have food poisoning: call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for immediate guidance.
- Bloody diarrhea, fever above 102°F or diarrhea lasting over three days: seek medical care now.
- Repeated vomiting prevents drinking, urination decreases or standing causes dizziness: seek medical care now.
What it probably is
Refrigerated food warmed during the outage. No power or ice for over four hours; meat, milk, eggs and leftovers are at risk. You can check
Frozen food thawed during a prolonged outage.Packages have no ice crystals and measure above 40°F.You can check
Unsafe food was cooled again after power returned.Food is cold now, but earlier warming time is unknown. Rechilling does not establish safety. For a pro
Time and parts
- Time
- 10–20 minutes to check and sort; longer for a large freezer.
