No hot water from an electric heater
Safety first
- Stay out of water near the heater or electrical equipment.
- Do not remove heater access covers or electrical panel covers.
- For smoke, fire, or active sparking: leave; call 911 outside.
Fix it nowEight steps
- Check another faucet's hot side carefully; avoid putting hands under potentially scalding water. One cold fixture points toward a fixture problem.
- Look for leaks from dry ground; do not touch wet equipment.Water near electricity creates a shock hazard.
- Leave all heater access covers and electrical panel covers installed.Internal electrical repairs belong to qualified professionals.
The other five steps
- With dry hands, dry footing, and undamaged equipment, inspect the labeled heater breaker.Never operate breakers while standing in water.
- If tripped, reset once: fully OFF, then ON; only if tank wasn't drained.A tripped breaker can interrupt heating.
- If it trips again, leave OFF; call a plumber. Never reset repeatedly.Repeated tripping needs professional fault diagnosis.
- Stop hot-water use; allow roughly one to two hours for tank recovery.Recovery takes time after heavy demand; timing varies.
- If still cold, call a plumber; report breaker behavior and any displayed errors.Elements, controls, and safety devices require qualified service.
When to stop
Stop and get a plumber if:
- Smoke, fire, or active sparking: leave immediately; call 911 outside.
- Water reaches electrical equipment, or reaching the breaker requires entering water: stay away; get professional help.
- Breaker trips again, will not latch, or equipment smells burned: stop; get professional service.
- Water was unusually hot before heating stopped: call a plumber; do not access the internal reset.
- Tank was drained or may be empty: do not restore power; call a plumber.
