An outlet stopped working

Safety first

  1. Stop using the outlet. Keep children away.
  2. Don't touch it if hot, wet, damaged, buzzing, or smelling burnt.
  3. Smoke, flames, or ongoing sparks? Leave; call 911 from outside.

Fix it nowEight steps

  1. Proceed only with dry hands, dry surroundings, and no warning signs.Heat, moisture, damage, or burning smells require stopping.
  2. Turn off and unplug devices from affected outlets, only if undamaged and dry.Remove connected loads before resetting protection.
  3. Turn on any nearby wall switch that may control this outlet. Some outlets are switched.
The other five steps
  1. At a dry, undamaged panel, open only its hinged door; leave covers attached.Never expose wiring or touch a wet or damaged panel.
  2. Reset only the identified tripped breaker once: fully OFF, then ON.If it trips again, leave it off; call an electrician.
  3. Find dry GFCIs in bathrooms, kitchen, garage, or outdoors; press tripped RESET once. One safety outlet can control others; never force RESET.
  4. Test with a lamp that works elsewhere; leave original devices unplugged.Confirm restored power without reconnecting a potentially faulty device.
  5. If still dead, stop using it; call an electrician. Don't remove the outlet. An unexplained failure can signal a serious wiring problem.

When to stop

Stop and get a electrician if:

  • Smoke, flames, or ongoing sparks: leave immediately; call 911 from outside.
  • Heat, burning odor, buzzing, discoloration, or melting: don't touch; call an electrician now.
  • Water, dampness, or any shock: stop; keep everyone away; call an electrician.
  • Breaker or GFCI trips again, or RESET won't hold: stop resetting; call an electrician.
  • Outlet stays dead, is cracked, or won't grip plugs: stop using it; call an electrician.
